Length: 1250 words- 1200-1300 words are accepted (outside the page range earns a D)
Audience: A group of college students who have read the play (and the poem)
Sources: 1. A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
2. “Harlem” by Langston Hughes (Hughes’ poem is located before the introduction to the play in

Assignment: Analyze A Raisin in the Sun using the following prompt:
Write an essay in which you interpret Langston Hughes’ poem “Harlem” and make connections between the poem and the play A Raisin in the Sun. Your analysis should demonstrate your understanding of how the parts of A Raisin in the Sun work to create a larger effect when paired with Hughes’ poem. Mention that Hughes and Hansberry are both born in Cleveland.Choose between 4 and 5 lines from the poem that you will interpret and connect to a character/situation in the play. The thesis will make an arguable statement about how the poem is reflected in the play and the argument that it helps Hansberry prove. Be sure to mention (within the thesis) the characters and/or situations that will be analyzed in the paper.
The intro will discuss both the poem and the play in a way that sets up your argument. Each body paragraph will focus on one line from the poem and the part of the play or the character that reflects the line from the poem. Be very specific. Use plentiful examples. For example, line 4 asks if a “dream deferred” will “fester like a sore—” (Hughes ln 1,4). In one body paragraph, you will state your interpretation of “fester like a sore,” and then you will make connections to a character or characters or a situation within the play where you feel like something “fester(ed) like a sore” while also discussing how this supports Hansberry’s overall argument. Be sure to add a clear conclusion that goes beyond a summary of the paper (See Chapter 11).
This interpretation will be your own though personal pronouns are not acceptable in this paper.
Questions to ask when drafting your analysis:
· Are the facts accurate? · Are all statements supported by evidence?
· Is the presentation logical? · Are all parts well developed?
Quotations:All quotations must have a lead-in, citation, and connection afterward. Quotations of dialogue from a play have a very different layout than the short quotations we’ve been using all semester. That format is linked below. The paper must include at least 1 long quotation though will likely have more because that is the format you will follow for any quotation that includes dialogue of more than 1 line or a monologue of more than 4 typed lines of the paper. The paper will include 4-5 brief quotations from the poem. It will also include 3-5 quotations from the text. overall. Paraphrases are also an excellent way to share a retelling of specific dialogue or action.
Works Cited Page:Your Works Cited page must include complete and accurate entries for the play and the poem separately. See below for the proper layout.
Any use of AI or any plagiarized words will earn the paper a 0. It cannot be rewritten for credit.
Any quotations from sources other than the play or poem will earn the paper a 0.
