While both “happenings” and “performance art” refer to live artistic events, a
“happening” is a specific type of performance art that emphasizes spontaneity, audience participation, and a loosely structured, often improvised experience, blurring the lines between art and life, whereas performance art is a broader term encompassing any live artistic action presented to an audience, which can be more structured and choreographed, with the artist’s actions as the primary focus.
A “Happening” was a term first used by Allan Kaprow to describe a one-time loosely structured performance that was considered art.
