Choose any kind of images of sexuality in film, artwork, video, literature, music, work of expression that you want to research and write about. This could be:something censoredsomething that falls within any genre or formThis can include short clips on, for example, from the famous websites everyone knows, or any online porn siteTumblr porn (and … now it’s gone)Webcam pornThis can be artworkThis can be literatureThis can be musicThis work can be from any other eraThis work can be short or long (it does not have to be a feature film)Anything and everything is acceptable for this assignment. This can be any kind of work of sexual expression.
It doesn’t have to be what we typically classify as “pornography” because, following Kendrick, we are all aware that “pornography” is still a concept. do this assignment to make the course easier for my students. You’ve all followed me through these complex ways of thinking about what we have come to call “pornography,” and how we got here, and want to give you something that’s maybe easier for all of you to do and that you can all relate to. In short, you do not have to let this word, “pornography” trip you up. You can write about any work of sexual expression in any form. It’s really up to you how you want to create a capstone experience for yourself in this class.
Some sample questions to get your started (you don’t have to use these, they are just there for you for guidance):
How does this work reflect social norms and values (e.g. gender, sex, race, class, etc.)?
How does this work reflect genre forms? (e.g. the classic “money shot”—this is a question about the formal properties of the form of expression)
How does this work reflect common tropes in forms of sexual expression?
This allows you to include some element of description as part of your analysis (a common feature of critical writing on media/film).
Feel free to be reflective in this exercise. The point is not so much to classify and name these forms, but rather to “do” the work of genre analysis: that is, to look at how these works of expression you’ve chosen to write about reflect social norms and values and what they teach us about ourselves, as well as to analyze them as formal works of expression (e.g. to think about how the formal properties of the work relate to its meaning). There are so many options for this assignment.
