As you work on this short introductory writing assignment you will consider the first two themes that crop up in the history of American music and culture; these are identity and cultural interactions. You will also introduce yourself to me through a piece of music, and brainstorm about favorite musical artists you might want to use for your final project. This assignment has five questions. P.S Please answer each question using the number of words suggested. Though some of the questions are personal, give me well-crafted answers that reflect your true ability as a writer.

Questions: 1. Identity: Music is often essential to a person’s identity as an individual or as a member of one or more societal groups. In what ways does the music you listen to relate to your identity?

Include at least one specific song or instrumental work in your answer (200 words) Think creatively about this. The answers to this question vary widely from person to person. Here is just one example: For some people taste in music is related to their membership in a large group, but for others music helps them define themselves against the mainstream.

2. Cultural interactions: Cultural interactions influence the history of musical style. How has interaction with a different culture influenced your musical taste or the music you yourself play or sing? Include at least one specific song or instrumental work in your answer. (150 words).

3. This may be difficult, but choose the song or instrumental work that most accurately represents you. Introduce the musician and music, describe what the music sounds like and explain the lyrics if there are any. Then explain how it reflects who you are. (200 words)
