Almost everybody has at least one social media account in today’s day and age, social media has contributed positively to many people’s lives and helped people stay in contact over far distances, but in my opinion, social media can also be very destructive in a person life and if someone spends too much time on it, it can cause many negative effects in a person’s life.

think people should limit their social media use because excessive use has been found to negatively affect mental health, it is a distraction from real-life interactions, and there is a lot of misinformation.

Social media has been studied to greatly affect people’s mental health in various different ways. People who use social media platforms excessively may start comparing themselves to others, which can result in increased loneliness, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Cyberbullying and online harassment are other huge issues on social media platforms, social media addiction can be like a drug or alcohol addiction and bring out the worst of a person. (Kowalski, 2014). A study from Strickland in 2014 shows that most active users of social media are at high risk of developing mental health issues at an alarming rate. (Bashir and Bhat, 2017) “It is clear that adverse effects of social media usage obligate propounded consequences for present generation especially for younger ones.”( Bashir and Bhat, 2017, p.129) With social media being so addictive, this can cause problems in people’s real-life relationships with family and friends. This can lead to loneliness and make life more difficult by having limited social interactions in society resulting in struggle due to

misunderstandings and miscommunication of nonverbal cues. “Social media is robbing us of trust and comfort we once placed in one another, replacing the human fellowship, physical and emotional support we once drew from each other with virtual connection. It robs us from self- control and from the ability to think independently and instead makes us gullible to join any group that posts perverse messages that tickle our ear and amuse our senses without evaluating the consequences.” (Amedie, 2015, p.3)
Social media has a lot of misinformation about topics such as science, history, politics, etc. Social media is now the most commonly used news source for a lot of people due to its ease of access and fast pace. On these platforms, there are people wanting to gain more views and popularity, and they can say the most outlandish things, which leads people to believe a lot of inaccurate information. A study conducted by MIT in 2018 found that false information can travel and be viewed up to 10 times faster. (Dizikes, 2018) This is why limiting the usage of social media and conducting your own independent research is most advised.

In conclusion, excessive use of social media can negatively affect people in a multitude of ways including mental health issues, addiction, bullying and harassment, and misinformation. There are people who are struggling with this now and it can ruin people’s lives.
