1Hi, Krystal,
Great job on outlining all the possible causes of GAD, from genetic predisposition to environmental and neurological.
2 Long-term alcohol use can affect multiple different system in our body. While we mainly know that it affects the liver, it can also cause affect other organs and and system in the body. According to Mukamal (2024), “alcohol intake above recommended guidelines is clearly associated with increased mortality and other medical morbidities.” As healthcare providers, it is important to educate our patients about these risks in alcohol consumption and identify any issues the patient may already have at an early stage.
One of the organs affected by excessive alcohol consumption is the liver. Alcohol is primarily metabolized in the liver and over time, the toxins build up in the liver causing inflammation. An example of liver disease includes alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease. Practitioner need to identify these through early detection by conducting blood work including liver function tests or ultrasound to determine any liver damage.
Other system such as neurological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal system can also be affected by chronic alcohol consumptions and can result in hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, hepatic encephalopathy, and pancreatitis.
The long-term effects of excessive alcohol consumption can affect multiple body systems. Regular screening and preventative measures is one of the many essential steps we need to support our patient and manage their care.
