Competency
In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competency:
Explain how cultural differences affect ethical decision making
Scenario
You are a political consultant for a state governor who has just established an exploratory committee to run for president. While she was popular as a governor, she has yet to establish herself as a national figure on the global stage. Additionally, many of the people of her small, rural state are relatively similar in race, culture, and background compared to the broader United States.
You have been hired to coach your candidate and her team on how to expand her political identity to appeal to a more diverse, national audience. Instead of dictating specific policy positions to the candidate, you will help her to decide on an ethical approach to the issues that is authentic to her values as well as her prospective constituents. To that end, you want to increase her awareness of how her own biases may have shaped her existing worldview. You will help to expand her understanding of how cultural differences can affect one’s ethics so that she can incorporate diverse perspectives into her own future policy decisions.
Your task is to select a topic from the Project Topics document (in the Supporting Materials section) and create a presentation explaining how cultural differences intersect with the ethics of that topic.
Directions
In your presentation, explain how cultural differences intersect with the ethics of your chosen topic. You will use your own background and cultural biases as examples to illustrate the broader principles for your candidate. Be sure to demonstrate the value of a more inclusive approach to ethical decision making that the candidate and her team can apply to other topics as they arise in their campaign.
Specifically, address the following in your presentation:
Introduce your presentation by explaining how the relationship between culture and ethics is relevant to your audience. Provide specific examples of cultural factors that affect ethical decision making to illustrate.
Then use your own background and experiences as a case example to illustrate the following:
Describe how your cultural background has influenced your morals and values. Be sure to differentiate between morals and values and ethics in your discussion. Support your description with specific examples.
Explain how your cultural biases have impacted your own ethical decisions about your chosen topic. Support your explanation with specific examples.
Conclude your presentation by explaining how diverse ethical perspectives can be useful to your candidate. Give specific examples to illustrate the value of diversity for addressing your chosen topic in the political realm.
What to Submit
Every project has a deliverable or deliverables, which are the files that must be submitted before your project can be assessed. For this project, you must submit the following:
Culture and Ethics Presentation
Your presentation should be created in PowerPoint and utilize speaker notes or voice comments. Your presentation should be 8–10 slides (not including the title slide or reference slides) with speaker notes and appropriate citations, as needed.
Culture and Ethics Speaker Notes
Your speaker notes should also be submitted as a Word document with 12-point Times New Roman font, double spacing, and one-inch margins. See the Supporting Materials section for information on how to save and convert the speaker notes into a Word file.
