What do you see in the film in terms of a larger theme or message (beyond the literal plot/characters)?

DIRECTIONS:
After watching the selections from Sofie Fiennes’ The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema (on Kanopy), presented by Slovenian philosopher/cultural theorist Slavoj Žižek, choose one film discussed in the documentary to work with for your Research/Discussion Essay project.
Write an essay, six double-spaced pages minimum (1,500 words), that explores Žižek’s analysis of your chosen film and develops your own interpretation that extends beyond Žižek’s initial claims. Your selected film from the list below will be your primary text for the essay; it will be the main topic of your analysis as you consider both Žižek’s comments and your own critical interpretations of the film.
The purpose of your essay and your film analysis is to answer these questions:
What does your selected film tell the audience about the nature of reality or human experience?
What do you see in the film in terms of a larger theme or message (beyond the literal plot/characters)?
What does the film show about the way films function in our own consciousness and/or our culture?
As you develop your essay, you should:
Identify a key idea and quote from Žižek about the specific film you’ve selected in Fienne’s documentary.
Discuss your interpretation of Žižek’s analysis, explaining how it illuminates aspects of the film.
Develop your own analysis of the film, considering how it relates to themes of illusion, reality, human experience, psychoanalysis, or philosophy.
Incorporate at least 3 additional scholarly sources from GCC OneSearch (books and databases) to support or spark your arguments. These can include works on psychoanalysis, film criticism, or related philosophical concepts.
Present your personal impressions and analysis of the film, explaining how it connects to broader ideas about cinema and human psychology.
