Underlined analytical thesis statement declaring the effectiveness of the essay, based on a careful examination of the aims and modes used by the essay.

Use of MLA format via in-text citation of quotes from the essay and a Works Cited list at the end of the paper.
Topic sentences at the beginning of every paragraph, each specifically connected to the overall thesis statement
Illustrating examples to support those topic sentences
Careful elaboration on how and why the examples support the topic sentences

Clear and cohesive writing

Careful attention paid to punctuation and grammar for clarity of expression

Using the Aims and Modes handout, review the meanings of the various aims and modes we have covered throughout our work this semester. Please answer as many of the following questions as possible as you write down your preliminary thoughts on the essay.

Basic OUTLINE of Analytical Paper:

Introduction: Give a brief identification of the author and the title of the essay, along with its main point. After that give a brief summary (5-7 sentences) that leads into your claim about the effectiveness of the rhetorical purposes and methods (aims and modes) used by the author.
1st body paragraph: main aim
Transition and topic sentence explaining the main aim (purpose) the author used and why it is an important choice for the author to make his/her point.
At least 2 examples from the essay pertaining to the main aim
Commentary on WHY and HOW these examples help achieve this main aim 2nd body paragraph: another aim

Transition and topic sentence explaining how ANOTHER aim supports the main aim. Why did the author use it? How is it connected to the main aim?

At least 2 examples from the essay pertaining to this other aim.
Commentary on WHY and HOW these examples help bring out this other aim and make it effective.
3rd body paragraph: modes

Transition and topic sentence explaining how certain methods (modes) help the author make his/her point well.
At least 2 examples of modes at work in the essay
Commentary on WHY and HOW these modes work well.
